The House in the Woods

Riley Norman

They say that should you start a fire
or think to lay your head
within those dark and ancient woods
around the house and stead
You should pour a pint out on
the roots and sharp blackthorn
and thank the very trees above
should you wake in the morn

For there’s a tale as old as words
of dark and distant lands
where beasts and frightful spirits roam
all dangerous and grand
but there is only safety here
among the mouse’ sprouts
you’ll find the monsters only dreams
unless you cross the house

If you are here in search of friend
or family long gone
You’ll find a meeting place for kin
and any who are lost
There’s one to the north and one to the south
Guess where the other two are?
I’d recommend you go around should you wish
to visit them all

If you are here in search of friend
or family long gone
You’ll find a meeting place for kin
and any who are lost
and if you are determined and the
stubborn sort of fool
grab a pint for that lonely road
and the house may see you through
