Fighting for Progress

Riley Norman

I've been writing but lack a certain direction. Plans have been made and rewrites attempted, with little success. There has been a whole section I removed but I don't count that because everytime I read it I thought "I really shouldn't have written that!" It was exposition. Necessary backstory passed along in the laziest possible manner.

This happened then that happened. Then this happened and that happened again. This and that are then combined to make there happen! Isn't this riveting?

FIrst I used strikethrough since parts of it were needed for the story (though definitely NOT where I'd put it.) Then I outright deleted it. I know they need to be included but I think I'll add it all in bits and pieces through ongoing dialogue.

That is where I've been somewhat stranded. Small rewites with endless planning. Then I heard the words of a writer concerning doing rewrites with a specific purpose. Focus only on locations for one full pass. Character descriptions for another. I'm trying this method and am only a couple chapters it but let me tell you, it is liberating. I find myself giving more creative and interesting descriptions than perhaps I ever had.

I ran into a Zoltar machine. Always a fan of the moving Big, I gave Zoltar a dollar. Not giving much credence to fortunes or the like, here's what I recieved:

A tall list of tasks weight heavily on the mind. Quit procrastinating and do what you've been saying you will to, today. Relief and peacefullness await.

I immediately started writing...

Did I mention the method of focusing on a particular angle has been inspiring and has added conciderably to how productive I am.
